Introduction: Welcome to Ghana!
If youβre planning your first trip to Ghana, these essential travel tips for Ghana will help you feel prepared, confident, and ready to make the most of your volunteering journey
Whether youβre coming to volunteer in Ghana or simply explore its rich culture and landscapes, this beautiful West African country has so much to offer. From friendly communities and colourful traditions to breathtaking coastlines and natural wonders, Ghana will leave a lasting impression.
To help you prepare, here are 10 practical tips every first-time traveller to Ghana should know.
1. Practical Travel Tips for Ghana: Get Your Visa and Documents Sorted Early
Before flying to Ghana, make sure you have:
- A valid passport (with at least 6 months remaining)
- A Ghanaian visa (apply online or at your nearest embassy)
- Your Yellow Fever vaccination certificate (required for entry)
π Tip: Make copies of important documents and keep a digital backup.
2. Pack Light but Smart
Ghana is warm year-round, so pack light, breathable clothes. Youβll also want:
- Comfortable walking shoes or sandals
- Modest outfits for visiting villages or religious sites
- Mosquito repellent and sunscreen
- A reusable water bottle
π If youβre joining a volunteer in Ghana program, bring clothes you donβt mind getting dirty!
3. Embrace the Local Culture
Ghanaians are known for their hospitality and respect for tradition. Learn a few local greetings in Twi or the language of the region youβll be staying in.
βοΈ Always greet people with a smile
βοΈ Dress modestly in rural areas
βοΈ Ask before taking photos of locals
Showing respect goes a long way here.
4. Prepare for a Slower Pace of Life
Time in Ghana flows differently β and thatβs part of its charm. Donβt be surprised if things take longer than expected.
β³ This relaxed pace is often called βGhana Timeβ, so embrace it and be patient. Flexibility is key, especially when volunteering or travelling between towns.
5. Stay Healthy and Safe
- Drink bottled or filtered water
- Wash hands often or carry hand sanitizer
- Use mosquito nets and repellent to prevent bites
- Avoid street food that isnβt freshly cooked
Before your trip, speak with a travel clinic about malaria prevention, and ensure youβre up to date on routine vaccinations.
6. Carry Cash β But Use It Wisely
Most shops, markets, and transport in Ghana are cash-based. If bringing cash, bring US dollar (USD) or Euros (EUR), and exchange money at a reputable forex bureau. The Ghanaian cedi (GHS) is a closed currency so not available outside of the country. Most of our volunteers chose to bring a visa or mastercard debit card and just withdraw cedis directly from local ATMs in the area.
π³ While major cities may accept cards, always carry cash in small bills β especially when traveling to rural areas.
7. Transport Can Be an Adventure
Public transport in Ghana includes tro-tros (shared minibuses), taxis, and buses.
- Tro-tros are cheap but can be cramped
- Negotiate taxi fares before starting the ride
- For longer distances, STC or VIP buses are more comfortable
If youβre volunteering in Ghana with Atlas Volunteers, local transport support will be arranged for you.

8. Try the Local Food (Youβll Love It!)
Ghanaian cuisine is full of bold flavours and fresh ingredients. Must-try dishes include:
- Jollof rice
- Fufu with groundnut soup
- Red-red (beans and plantains)
- Kelewele (spicy fried plantains)
Be adventurous, but start slow if your stomach isnβt used to spicy food!
9. Respect Local Customs and Community Life
Volunteering in Ghana means being part of the local community. Be respectful, curious, and open to learning.
π¬ Tip: Ask questions, listen more than you speak, and take the opportunity to learn from locals β theyβre the heart of the experience.
10. Keep an Open Mind and Heart
Ghana might challenge you at times β but it will also inspire you.
From power cuts to busy markets, life here is different. But if you stay open-minded and embrace the journey, youβll return home with unforgettable memories and a new outlook on the world.
