Why this program?

The conservation facility is based within the Gita Nada Marine Park in the Sekotong region of Lombok. Gita Nada MPA is teeming with life and has a rich biodiversity, which ranges from the very small, like the pygmy sea horses โ€“ infamous residents of sea fans โ€“ to the very large such as passing sharks and a very elusive yet magnificent family of dugongs. Whilst the marine park is protected on paper, enforcement is lacking and the area is under threat from unsustainable fishing techniques, climate change, and the development of irresponsible tourism. There is also a great deal of restoration work that needs to be done resulting from historic dynamite fishing and bleaching events. Empirical data on the biodiversity of the area is also lacking and this is just one of the issues that we are working to remedy.

It is our belief that if we are to minimize or better still reverse, the negative effects that we are causing on the amazing organisms and ecosystems that we share the Earth with, this will only be achieved by research, understanding, and education.

Mankind has known the impacts of its actions and yet failed to do something for far too long. It is time we came together to change that.

We refuse to let ours be the generation that fails to act. We can deny the truth but we can not avoid it, and ifย we keepย making excuses to do nothing then we will very soon be facing a reality where too much destruction has been caused for us to recover.

So ask yourself:ย How many ecosystems must collapse? How many species must go extinct, so that our childrenย never get to admire or befriendย them? How long can we pretend that our โ€˜progressโ€™ is without consequence?

ITโ€™S STILL NOT TOO LATE.

“One of the best experiences of my life. Iโ€™m glad to experience this, I have met wonderful people and made real friendships. The Ghanaian people are so welcoming and share their culture with you, they are so open minded and free to work with.”

~ Jeremy F / Sea Turtle Conservation Volunteer

ย The trip was a unique experience for me! My expectations were exceeded by far and I am glad to have found the project. If you don’t mind getting up at night on patrols to find turtles and eggs, this project is great. In addition to working at school, on the farm and collecting and recycling plastic waste on the beach, this project is very versatile and never gets boring. I can only recommend this project!
